Minneriya National Park Safari
Located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, Minneriya National Park is one of the best wildlife destinations in Asia for elephant sightings. Spanning over 8,800 hectares, the park is centered around the Minneriya Tank, an ancient reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD, which attracts hundreds of wild elephants during the dry season.
The park is part of the Elephant Corridor linking Wasgamuwa, Kaudulla, and Somawathiya National Parks, providing safe passage for Sri Lanka’s largest land mammals. Visitors can witness wildlife in its purest form — from playful elephant herds and colorful birds to rare reptiles and monkeys.
Wildlife and The Elephant Gathering
Minneriya is globally famous for “The Gathering”, a spectacular event that occurs from July to October, where up to 300 elephants congregate near the reservoir to drink, bathe, and socialize. It is one of the largest wild elephant gatherings in the world and a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience.
Other wildlife species commonly seen include:
- Sri Lankan leopards (rare)
- Purple-faced langurs and toque macaques
- Mugger crocodiles
- Over 160 species of birds, including painted storks, pelicans, and hornbills
- Monitor lizards and star tortoises
