Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular and heartwarming tourist attractions.

Located in the village of Pinnawala, about 90 kilometers from Colombo,

this sanctuary was established in 1975 to care for orphaned, injured, and abandoned elephants found in the wild. Over the years, it has grown into a large facility housing dozens of elephants, including babies born at the orphanage.

Visitors to Pinnawala can witness elephants living in a semi-natural habitat, where they are cared for by dedicated mahouts (elephant caretakers). The orphanage plays a crucial role in elephant conservation and offers a unique opportunity to get up close with these majestic animals in a responsible and educational setting.

Activities for Tourists at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

  1. Elephant Feeding:
Tourists can watch or participate in feeding baby elephants with bottles of milk during scheduled feeding times. It’s one of the most memorable and adorable experiences at the orphanage.
  2. Elephant Bathing at the River:
A major highlight is watching the elephants bathe in the nearby Maha Oya River. This usually happens twice a day. Tourists can observe the elephants playfully splashing, rolling, and interacting in the water—great for photography and relaxing to watch.
  3. Walking Among the Elephants:
With supervision, visitors can walk around the open areas where elephants roam. Though direct touching is limited for safety reasons, the proximity allows for an immersive experience.
  4. Educational Tours:
The orphanage offers informative sessions about elephant care, behavior, conservation, and the history of the orphanage. Ideal for families and those interested in wildlife education.
  5. Photography Opportunities:
With scenic surroundings and gentle giants all around, Pinnawala is perfect for photography. The river bathing sessions especially provide stunning photo opportunities.
  6. Shopping for Souvenirs:
There are shops near the entrance selling elephant-themed souvenirs, handicrafts, batik items, and local snacks that make great mementos of your visit.
  7. Dining Nearby:
Several restaurants and cafes around the orphanage offer beautiful views of the elephants or the river while you enjoy Sri Lankan cuisine.

Best Time to Visit

The elephant bathing times are usually around 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, so visiting during those hours gives the best experience. Weekdays are less crowded compared to weekends and public holidays.
